Artist Statement

Where Are We Safe depicts the everyday battles and victories that sexual assault survivors encounter. It’s about understanding that what you see on the surface does not correlate with what is happening within the layers below when it comes to someone’s mental state. When we peel back these layers it allows us to read between the lines and understand what hardships these victims face on a day-to-day basis. These layers tell a story that allow us to connect with our inner selves and the people that surround us. It is easy for us to conceal our stories in order to heal, but many of us need to come together and share our stories and heal by being able to lean on one another. Our stories make us who we are, and by sharing Chanel Millers story I will hopefully inspire other victims to heal by sharing theirs. It’s easy for us to conceal our stories in order to mask the past that haunts us, but instead we should unite, lean on one another, and heal together.
