Survival is different for each of us. Commonly we think of survival as something we do in response to a situation, but in reality, we are surviving every day through routines and expectations that we have adapted to in our lives.
My story is familiar when it comes to being biracial, having one white parent and one black. However, each story is different and what makes mine distinctive is that I’ve never lived under one roof with both of my parents. I have consistently been moving between households since I was born, which has presented unique challenges. Through never settling, I have constantly been improving my adaption and survival skills to each cultural expectation presented to me, growing some of my strongest qualities.
As a proud woman of color, I realize how much these personal qualities helped me develop my identity, resiliency and creative and social skills. It has also given me the unique ability to see complex social and culture issues, which helped shape my social entrepreneurship career path.
