Growth and progress happen more efficiently when you allow yourself to let go of the past and the things holding you back. Vulnerability can be defined as choosing to be your authentic self despite facing the fear and uncertainty of going out of your comfort zone. It is a needed path to grow and discover our potential. However, we are often battered by our fear of the unknown.
I started my college journey at a small technical college in La Crosse. I knew straight from the beginning that I wanted to go to a small school because a four-year university was not the right step for me. There, I was my most authentic self. After graduation, I started a new journey at Winona State University. Coming to a new school amid a pandemic has put me in many vulnerable positions. And at times, I didn’t feel like I belonged. But, as the year progressed, I realized that I did belong; I just had to step out of my comfort zone.
My exhibition Transform illustrates my emotions throughout my journey, discovering an entirely new concept of growth from two perspectives: The before and after of my decision to accept change. Employing the various pre and post-photography techniques, I expressed how I felt blinded in the comfort of my hometown versus the exhilarating rewards after the extremely stressful challenge of coping with change. Staying in a position of contentment has prevented me from reaching my full potential. Having a great understanding of vulnerability from Brené Brown, I now realize being vulnerable is an essential part of creativity and how it will continue to lead me to new growth.
