Acculturation

Fashion is the unspoken language shared between members of our species. We are making a statement or reflecting the climate of our culture every time we dress ourselves. Have you ever wondered what influences you to choose what to wear other than to keep warm?

With the emergence of this new consciousness surrounding fashion, we have been bombarded by the notion that we need to have a constantly fresh and trendy wardrobe. After convincing us, they offer low cost options that the environment is footing the bill for.

This phenomenon is exacerbated by the prevalence of fast fashion. To meet the growing demands for trendy and “stylish” clothes, we have pushed this form of self expression beyond expressing creativity and culture and we have experienced an acculturation of a constantly changing wardrobe. This pressure has contributed to fashion being the 2nd largest industry that pollutes the planet.

I believe changing the culture and awareness around fast fashion is the key to bringing back a healthy relationship with fashion. To undo the damage we have caused mother nature requires us to come to terms with slowing down consumption so that she may reach equilibrium again. I hope this piece inspires you of the beauty of upcycling and the ugliness of low cost clothing.

What is the cost of feeding this invisible ravenous beast that is both present inward and outward ourselves. I have wrestled with this question since I became aware of the vices of the fast fashion industry. My goal is to promote a culture of reusing and actually wearing the clothes that we buy and I hope this piece inspires people to do the same.
