INTERTWINED

Process

I chose to use the fourth part of the cycle as my topic for my senior show which is family and community. In the early stages of my project I went through a large amount of failure to find the best way to portray my message. I tried things like perceptual shift installation, interactive writing installations, weaving portraits, and more. After many discussions with my professors, classmates, and friends, I knew that through the process of weaving I would be able to best portray how we are each affected by the people in our lives.

Artist Statement

Each of us have evolving relationships which move in and out throughout our lives. Like all things, relationships & communities require us to reanalyze this aspect of our life over and over again. They intertwine throughout our lives to build who we are and who we will become. This concept of self is woven-together and built by each of our families and communities. We should constantly evaluate and maintain the relationships we hold to ensure that the people in our lives are receiving the love that they need and that, at the same time, we are as well.

Intertwined is an exhibition that explores the realizations that I have made through the many hardships and challenges I faced during the pandemic. I have come to realize the true value in my relationships and was able to begin building stronger connections with the people who have given me my most cherished qualities.

Through the tedious process of interlacing images of the people who impact me most, I slowly unveil how they have come together to leave an impact on my life. As I started to connect the sections of family and community together and embed meaningful phrases, I discovered the influence of these people on my unique personality. This process can be chaotic and overwhelming at times, but it is through the action of weaving that I have grown to understand how meaningful my connections are and how important they have been in my life.

Relationships must be a priority; We must make time for each of the relationships in our lives and cherish our time together. The world is unpredictable, and moments with our loved ones are not guaranteed.

I hope each viewer is pushed to reflect on the people they surround themselves with and the value that those relationships hold.
