Artist Statement
During our lives, we are constantly asked to reexamine who our inner circle is as we form new friendships, find new colleagues, and even start families of our own. We ask ourselves who are the people we can depend on and who are the people that will love and accept us unconditionally.
Looking back in my life, a lot of the time I have found these connections and formed these families or inner circles with people who aren’t necessarily related to me by blood. I have even formed connections with people and would consider those bonds stronger than the bonds I have with my blood relatives. The common belief that a nuclear family being the only way to measure closest people in our lives is no longer valid.
These connections we make form who we are as people. As we continue to let people into our lives we collect influences (pieces) from them, and all these pieces build and create who we are as a person. Every decision we have made is influenced by an interaction we had with a loved one in the past. The way we tie our shoes was maybe taught to us by a friend, or the music we like was introduced by an aunt.
