I am the first stage of Sonder, which focuses on self-reflection. I wanted to create an installation piece that evoked self-reflection using nostalgia, deep questions, and isolation. I went through a lot of trial and error searching for a way to integrate all three of those things, which ultimately led to using a hanging sonotube with a collage of many images and questions. I went through a lot of failures during this project, whether it was making the sonotube less ugly or tile printing my collage. In the end, everything worked out the way my professor and I had imagined it and I hope it helps each person to discover themselves deeper.
To experience the complexity of sonder, you have to understand the true complexities within yourself. Surface-level things, stuff other people know or don’t know about you, and the things that are hidden in the depths of your mind. What really makes you, you? The answer; everything, significant or insignificant. From the clothes you wear to the places that make you feel safe, the things you enjoy that make you feel alive, and all the core memories that linger and bare immense emotions. To know yourself deeper is to understand the unique lens you have and how you perceive the world. How you view injustice, hate, loneliness, love, sorrow, passion, and everything in between. Every single thing about you is what makes you, you.
Unveiled is an experimental installation designed to evoke inner reflection. I am revealing to you the route in which I took to discover and understand my inner identity that has helped me deepen my connection with other people. The goal of Unveiled is to help reveal your own complexities to yourself, so I invite you to read the questions as well as study the elements inside. Allow yourself to answer the questions honestly while remembering things that have been forgotten or hidden and appreciating the things that have stayed with you all these years. When you leave this stage, I want you to be left with the epiphany that every life decision you’ve made has led you to who you are now. Even though you might continue to grow and change, I hope this time of reflection will be beneficial to you as you continue to re-discover yourself.
