Our tooling is a z-shaped glass fiber/epoxy cardboard tool. Glass fiber tools are known as soft tooling which are designed for limited production. The cardboard was cut to size and taped into the z-shape form. Using a quick bond adhesive and 2×4’s it was possible to hold the cardboard in the z-shape for laying up glass fiber. Sheets of glass fiber were then wet out with epoxy on a separate surface and moved to the cardboard. By wetting the glass fiber on a separate surface the amount of excess epoxy was limited to prevent warping within the cardboard during cure. Glass fiber was laid up on both sides of the cardboard to the same thickness as our honeycomb core to create our 2 sided glass fiber/epoxy cardboard tool.
