{"id":1253,"date":"2019-05-03T18:19:05","date_gmt":"2019-05-03T23:19:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/?p=1253"},"modified":"2019-05-03T18:19:05","modified_gmt":"2019-05-03T23:19:05","slug":"annual-senior-art-show-kicks-off-with-fluid-studio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/blog\/2019\/05\/03\/annual-senior-art-show-kicks-off-with-fluid-studio\/","title":{"rendered":"Annual senior art show kicks off with &#8220;Fluid Studio&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The culmination of four years of dedication to art will be on display at Winona State University during the last two weeks of the 2019 spring semester.<\/p>\n<p>The annual Senior Art Show will feature work by students graduating on May 10 or who will be graduating in the fall, all majoring in art, art education and design.<\/p>\n<p>Roger Boulay, the Gallery and Art Collection Coordinator said the addition of the design students is new to the show this year which brings a new element to the exhibition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re presenting a range of work; some have altered photographs, some students have designed their own patterns that will be printed,\u201d Boulay said. \u201cOne design student is making clothing, he\u2019s really interested in fashion so he\u2019s making his own jacket that will be laser engraved with text on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The show opens on April 29 and features six students with a show called \u201cFluid Studio,\u201d that will deal in color and the challenge of a group show.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1256\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1256\" style=\"width: 199px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/Girgen-SeniorArtShow-5.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1256 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/Girgen-SeniorArtShow-5-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"Student observes art\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/Girgen-SeniorArtShow-5-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/Girgen-SeniorArtShow-5-768x1160.jpg 768w, https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/Girgen-SeniorArtShow-5-678x1024.jpg 678w, https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/Girgen-SeniorArtShow-5.jpg 1632w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1256\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sophomore Zayle Swope observes Olivia VanDenBerge\u2019s instillation piece \u201cGarden of My Heart\u201d in Watkins Gallery on Tuesday, April 30.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a little bit tricky in a group show when you have six different artists with six very different points of view to find one theme that really encapsulates everyone,\u201d Boulay said. \u201cSo Fluid Studio is meant to speak to that conundrum of a group show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The second week will focus on the remaining six students starting May 6, the theme for that show is \u201cRoots,\u201d which explores where people are from, ideas of home and self-portraiture.<\/p>\n<p>Kieran McDonnell, a senior majoring in studio arts is in the \u201cFluid Studio\u201d exhibit.<\/p>\n<p>McDonnell expressed his excitement on showing his work in a gallery that has featured many nationally and internationally known professional artists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be in the same space as them is really an honor, but this show is really a wonderful opportunity for us,\u201d McDonnell said. \u201cOur show is based around our perception of how we\u2019ve grown as artists\u2026everyone in here has worked hard and we are all looking forward to seeing this show come to completion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFluid Studio\u201d was originally going to feature the students\u2019 first self-portrait alongside a current one, but for spacing reasons that element was cut from the first show.<\/p>\n<p>This element will be featured in \u201cRoots,\u201d allowing gallery viewers to see the progress of each student and compare the two works.<\/p>\n<p>In Boulay\u2019s class, students create a professional portfolio and learn how to install , so they will be installing the exhibit in the Watkins Gallery.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1254\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1254\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/Girgen-SeniorArtShow-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1254 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/Girgen-SeniorArtShow-1-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Students hang art work\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/Girgen-SeniorArtShow-1-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/Girgen-SeniorArtShow-1-768x509.jpg 768w, https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/Girgen-SeniorArtShow-1-1024x678.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1254\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jesse Peterson (right) hangs \u201cSelf Care Girlie\u201d with the help of her classmate, Kieran McDonnell, in Watkins Gallery on Friday, April 26 as part of her exhibition in the annual Senior Art Show. Peterson and McDonnell are participating in the first week of the show titled \u201cFluid Studio\u201d which runs April 29 through May 1.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s entirely up to the students to design and install their own exhibition,\u201d Boulay said. \u201cI\u2019ve taught them how to install their work and now it\u2019s up to them to get everything organized and decide how everything is going to look.
