{"id":1285,"date":"2019-05-06T14:09:12","date_gmt":"2019-05-06T19:09:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/?p=1285"},"modified":"2019-05-06T14:09:12","modified_gmt":"2019-05-06T19:09:12","slug":"new-painting-installed-in-baldwin-lounge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/blog\/2019\/05\/06\/new-painting-installed-in-baldwin-lounge\/","title":{"rendered":"New painting installed in Baldwin Lounge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>A new painting by a Winona State University faculty member was\u00a0<\/span><span>put<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>on display in a campus building\u00a0<\/span><span>on Friday, April 22.\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>ChunLok<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>Mah<\/span><span>, chair of the\u00a0<\/span><span>Winona State\u00a0<\/span><span>art department, showed off his painting entitled \u201cStorm: Before and After\u201d in Baldwin Lounge<\/span><span>\u00a0of Winona State\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span>Kryzsko<\/span><span>\u00a0Commons student union building.\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Mah<\/span><span>\u00a0said his piece walks the viewer through the emotions of a storm starting at the left and going to the right.\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In his artist statement<\/span><span>,<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>Mah<\/span><span>\u00a0wrote about what the piece means to him.\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe emotions were a collision of past and present experiences that reminded me of all the harsh, bitter and difficult events that I fought for years that often resulted in bittersweet endings,&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><span>Mah<\/span><span>\u00a0said. \u201cIt was like having an epiphany of life condensed in one moment.\u201d<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The painting is about 17 feet wide.\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Joe Reed,\u00a0<\/span><span>Winona State\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span>student union\/activities director, bought the painting from\u00a0<\/span><span>Mah<\/span><span>\u00a0after President Scott Olson told him about the piece.\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The total cost of the painting and\u00a0<\/span><span>instillation<\/span><span>\u00a0was\u00a0<\/span><span>$4,800.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1284\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1284\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/swenson_newart_5-2-19_3\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1284\" src=\"https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/Swenson_NewArt_5-2-19_3-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/Swenson_NewArt_5-2-19_3-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/Swenson_NewArt_5-2-19_3-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/Swenson_NewArt_5-2-19_3-1024x681.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1284\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Guests at the reception listen as Mah speaks about his piece. Reed said the display of the painting did not do it justice.\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Reed wanted to find a good place in\u00a0<\/span><span>Kryzco<\/span><span>\u00a0Commons for the painting.\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe are walking around\u00a0<\/span><span>Kryzco<\/span><span>\u00a0and all of a sudden it hit me&#8230;Baldwin,\u201d Reed said. \u201cSince the renovation to the bookstore and this edition it was always a dark room and\u00a0<\/span><span>now<\/span><span>\u00a0we got all these windows.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Mah<\/span><span>\u00a0said there were some difficulties during the installation process<\/span><span>.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe chosen design proceeds to post many challenges like lack of proper lighting, wall dimension, weak drywall, and thermostat outlet position, during the installation,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span>Mah<\/span><span>\u00a0said. \u201cWe made some major\u00a0tweaks\u00a0so the artwork<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>fits seamlessly to the setting.\u201d<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>At the reception<\/span><span>,<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>Mah<\/span><span>\u00a0said he hoped students would see the painting and talk about what it means to them.\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Mah<\/span><span>\u00a0said he used raw brush strokes to\u00a0<\/span><span>evoke\u00a0<\/span><span>anxiety from the viewer.\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>At the conclusion of\u00a0<\/span><span>Mah\u2019s<\/span><span>\u00a0speech he asked those in attendance to talk about the feeling the painting\u00a0<\/span><span>evoked<\/span><span>.\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1283\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1283\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/swenson_newart_5-2-19_2\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1283\" src=\"https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/Swenson_NewArt_5-2-19_2-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/Swenson_NewArt_5-2-19_2-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/Swenson_NewArt_5-2-19_2-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/05\/Swenson_NewArt_5-2-19_2-1024x681.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1283\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Guests at the reception in Baldwin hall admire \u201cStorm: Before and After. One of the guests pictured said for her the painting show optimism because if in the darkest part there is still light.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span>Hedi Ryan<\/span><span>, Winona State art and design office assistant,<\/span><span>\u00a0talked about the feelings the painting evoked.\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ryan said she saw the painting as a metaphor for how to approach life. She said because\u00a0<\/span><span>there<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>is still light\u00a0<\/span><span>in the darkest photo<\/span><span>,<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>which for Ryan\u00a0<\/span><span>shows<\/span><span>\u00a0optimism<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>through good and bad times.\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Baldwin Lounge, where the reception was held, is a quit study place for students.\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Reed said he took the purpose of the space into consideration when he was planning the reception.\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Reed said to him as with students he views Baldwin Lounge\u00a0<\/span><span>as a place for studying.\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBecause to me<\/span><span>,<\/span><span>\u00a0as is the students<\/span><span>,<\/span><span>\u00a0Baldwin is\u00a0<\/span><span>kinda<\/span><span>\u00a0like a sacred ground for study time,\u201d Reed\u00a0<\/span><span>said.<\/span><span>\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s appropriate we have the reception there and Friday would be a good day because it&#8217;s the least used.\u201d<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When Reed arrived at the reception, he walked up to students studying at the tables and explained what was going on and apologized for\u00a0<\/span><span>the<\/span><span>\u00a0inc<\/span><span>onvenience<\/span><span>.\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He also told studying students to help themselves to<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>refreshments.\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Mah\u00a0is honored to have a piece in the\u00a0<\/span><span>Kryzco<\/span><span>\u00a0collection.\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cJoe&#8217;s proposal and the location choice was a dream come true to me,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span>Mah<\/span><span>\u00a0said. \u201cIt turns out to be better than I thought.\u201d<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For more information about ChunLok Mah or to see more of his art visit:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/art\/faculty.html\">https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/art\/faculty.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chunlokmah.com\/\"><span>http:\/\/chunlokmah.com\/<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new painting by a Winona State University faculty member was\u00a0put\u00a0on display in a campus building\u00a0on Friday, April 22.\u00a0\u00a0 ChunLok\u00a0Mah, chair of the\u00a0Winona State\u00a0art department, showed off his painting entitled \u201cStorm: Before and After\u201d in Baldwin Lounge\u00a0of Winona State\u2019s\u00a0Kryzsko\u00a0Commons student union building.\u00a0\u00a0 Mah\u00a0said his piece walks the viewer through the emotions of a storm starting &hellip;
