{"id":1452,"date":"2020-02-11T14:33:27","date_gmt":"2020-02-11T20:33:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/?p=1452"},"modified":"2020-02-11T14:43:12","modified_gmt":"2020-02-11T20:43:12","slug":"car-delivery-service-attempts-to-drive-others-out-of-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/blog\/2020\/02\/11\/car-delivery-service-attempts-to-drive-others-out-of-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Car-delivery service attempts to drive others out of business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For residents of Winona, Minnesota, a college city on the<br \/>\nMississippi, the possibilities on how to get from Point A to Point B are plentiful.<\/p>\n<p>The city offers a four-route shuttle bus system, a taxicab company and a recreation center equipped with canoes, rollerblades and bicycles.<\/p>\n<p>If all else fails, a scenic stroll can get someone almost anywhere worth going in about 20 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>One thing Winona didn\u2019t have until 2018 was Lyft, a direct driver-to-rider, cashless car service controlled solely by cell phones.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 474px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-1452-1\" width=\"474\" height=\"843\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/Hippensteel_Story1-Video.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/Hippensteel_Story1-Video.mp4\">https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/Hippensteel_Story1-Video.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>As part of the Rochester Area radius, the service extends from Red Wing to Albert Lea.<\/p>\n<p>The first step in the Lyft process is to create a rider or driver profile.<\/p>\n<p>Once the profile is created, users input a debit or credit card which allows money to be withdrawn as a rider and deposited as a driver.<\/p>\n<p>From there, riders can type in their point for pick-up and drop off.<\/p>\n<p>What happens next?<\/p>\n<p>The nearest driver will be on their way to the designated pick-up point.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1447\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1447\" style=\"width: 416px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/Hippensteel-Story1-Photo4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1447\" src=\"https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/Hippensteel-Story1-Photo4-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Lyft driver sticker in front of vehicle window\" width=\"416\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/Hippensteel-Story1-Photo4-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/Hippensteel-Story1-Photo4-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/Hippensteel-Story1-Photo4-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/Hippensteel-Story1-Photo4.jpg 1050w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 416px) 100vw, 416px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1447\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">All drivers who have made it through the company screening process of their driving record, license and insurance will be able to mark their vehicle as Lyft-certified with a sticker in the front and back.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While the idea of getting in a stranger\u2019s vehicle may make some<br \/>\nuneasy, Lyft implemented the ability for riders and drivers alike to watch a digitized progression of the ride.<\/p>\n<p>Lex Lea, a Winona State University junior (in the featured photo above), jumped at the chance to join Lyft this past summer and make money doing an enjoyable task for her: driving.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s been a driver with Lyft for six months.<\/p>\n<p>Lyft ran a background check, driver\u2019s record check and confirmation of her license and insurance.<\/p>\n<p>Every element of the application is approved individually. Drivers cannot begin until all parts have passed Lyft\u2019s driver screening.<\/p>\n<p>Lea said Lyft periodically offers instructional videos to help prepare drivers to handle situations with riders.<\/p>\n<p>While she likes Lyft for its flexible hours, Lea said she uses it for fast cash and not as her primary income.<\/p>\n<p>It can take a considerable amount of drives with the minimum rate that starts at $3.64 and goes up per mile.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the payment for her though is the entertaining riders.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1446\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1446\" style=\"width: 285px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/Hippensteel-Story1-Photo3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1446\" src=\"https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/Hippensteel-Story1-Photo3-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"A car ceiling full of collector buttons\" width=\"285\" height=\"305\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1446\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Riders can tip and rate drivers on quality and efficiency of the rider\u2019s trip. Lex Lea boosts her rating with a conversation-starting element to her car: a car ceiling decked out with her collectible-button collection.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One of Lea\u2019s favorite interactions came from a group of drunken girls who \u201chyped her up\u201d by persistently calling everyone in the car, Lea included, \u201con point and so pretty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s interesting that drunk people always think that they\u2019re found to be annoying by sober people. I don\u2019t mind, though. It\u2019s entertaining and much better than sitting at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaitlyn Tenney, a Winona State senior, started with Lyft in October as she saw her dad go through the process, which she described as \u201csuper easy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When Tenney drives, she said she prefers Thursday to Saturday nights until bar close around 1 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>Despite drunken antics, Tenney said the service makes sense for Winona.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a useful service for the bar scene and convenient because<br \/>\nalmost everyone has a phone,\u201d Tenney said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Tenney, she\u2019s had riders who use it if they\u2019re unable to drive and need to get to work, pick up groceries and get to<br \/>\ntreatment groups.<\/p>\n<p>As more people learn of the service, Lyft may become the primary way to get around Winona.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For residents of Winona, Minnesota, a college city on the Mississippi, the possibilities on how to get from Point A to Point B are plentiful.
