{"id":783,"date":"2017-10-23T18:47:53","date_gmt":"2017-10-23T23:47:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wpacad2.winona.edu\/winona360\/?p=783"},"modified":"2017-10-23T18:51:04","modified_gmt":"2017-10-23T23:51:04","slug":"pedestrian-tunnels-are-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/educate.winona.edu\/winona360\/blog\/2017\/10\/23\/pedestrian-tunnels-are-open\/","title":{"rendered":"Pedestrian Tunnels Are Open"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After more than a decade of planning, and more than a year of construction, two pedestrian tunnels under the railroad tracks adjacent to the Winona State University campus are open.<\/p>\n<p>The tunnels opened in time for WSU&#8217;s Homecoming football game on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>WSU received a federal funds grant in 2006 to assist with the cost of construction of two pedestrian tunnels under the Canadian Pacific rail lines that run east-west through the campus, separating the main part of campus from athletic fields.<\/p>\n<p>Students, faculty, staff and community members now can safely cross the tracks by using the tunnels which also include ramps that follow Americans With Disabilities Act guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>The tunnels were built after many years of research and planning, and cooperation between the university, city, county and state agencies and railroad company planners.<\/p>\n<p>WSU Mass Communication Professor Tom Grier used the department&#8217;s unnamed aerial vehicle to shoot video of pedestrians using the tunnel while a train passes prior to the WSU Homecoming football game.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Winona State University - Train Tunnel - Football Game 10-21-17\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/239284594?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"474\" height=\"267\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After more than a decade of planning, and more than a year of construction, two pedestrian tunnels under the railroad tracks adjacent to the Winona State University campus are open.
