The location of the training is Concordia University in St. Paul, Minnesota. Founded in 1893, Concordia is a liberal arts university that serves more than 5,000 students. The campus is located just 10 minutes from downtown St. Paul and approximately 15 minutes from downtown Minneapolis.
Our program will serve all areas of Minnesota where counselors of color reside and work. As will be explained in greater detail under “Recruitment Strategies” the BIPOC communities, though small in comparison, are varied and widespread in Minnesota with no centralized organization(s) focused on BIPOC counselors from among the Asian, Latinx, Indigenous, and Black Minnesotan communities. Thus, it is important to cast a wide net to achieve the greatest success in gaining eligible participants for our supervisor training. Thus, we will be drawing students from across the state of Minnesota with special focus on the Twin Cities metro area, Rochester, and Winona. We are proposing a structured outreach designed to target professional organizations and mental health service providers statewide.
Our program addresses unique challenges to training attendance faced by students we are recruiting from across Minnesota, including travel, childcare, meal service, instruction, training materials, and housing. Concordia University in St. Paul was selected as a location because it offers a centralized location to prospective students across the state, which will lessen the transportation burden for many and may even eliminate the need for overnight accommodations and childcare concerns for some. Our program is designed as a summer intensive over three weekends, minimizing the need to interrupt the work week or use accrued vacation or paid leave.
