Qualification Test Plan

Qualification testing was conducted in order to confirm that the final design met the standards essential to the production of the side car.

Tests conducted

Weathering Test

A QUV Accelerated Weathering Tester was used to conduct a weathering test of three 10 in x 1/2 in specimen. The specimens were exposed for 10 days and then subjected to a 3-point bend test per ASTM D 790.

Custom 3-point Bend Test

A replica bottom sandwich panel was placed between two benches in order to see if it can hold the required 200 lbs. 45 lb weightlifting plates were placed one by one on the panel until failure.

Water Retention Test

Three 10 in by 1/2 in specimens were placed in a water filled container for 24 hours completely submerged. Following the removal of the specimens from the water, the specimens were tested for flexural strength retention using a three-point bend test via ASTM D 790.

Gardner Impact Drop Test

Three 4 in x 4 in specimens were used. The tests were conducted via ASTM D5420. A 34 lb striker was used to hit the specimens from three different heights.

Custom Drop Impact Test

A 1 in diameter rock was dropped from a height of 31 ft to simulate road debris hitting the side car at 25 mph. The panel replica was placed on the ground below the rock and the rock was dropped to hit the panel.
